Giving us proof

Proving your identity is simple. Each applicant just needs to show us two copied documents containing your name and address. We will make a record of the details. The type of documents we accept are common to most people, so you shouldn't have any difficulty producing at least two of them. What types of identification do you accept?

To Confirm your name

Current full signed passport.
Current UK (old paper style) full driving licence (old style provisional is not acceptable).
Current UK or EEA Photo Card driving licence (full provisional).
Current Shotgun or Firearms Certificate.
Building industry sub-contractor's certificate: (CIS4(P), CIS4(T), CIS5 or CIS6 Photo Registration Card (issued by the Inland Revenue).
Current benefits book or original notification letter confirming your right to benefits or state pension.
Current Inland Revenue tax notifications.
Current Residence permit (issued by the Home Office to Eu nationals).
Current EEA member State Identity Card.
Current Blue disabled Driver's Pass.
Northern Ireland Voter's Card.
Original notification letter confirming your right to benefits or state pension.
Current Shotgun or Firearms Certificate.
Building industry sub-contractor's certificate: CIS4, CIS4(P), CIS4(T), CIS5 or CIS6 Photo Registration Card (issued by the Inland Revenue).
Current Inland Revenue tax notifications.
Birth certificate or NHS Medical Card (if you're under 18).
Recent systems-generated or signed documentation from a regulated financial services sector firm indicating that the account / investment / insurance relationship exists and which contains your address.

Recent utility bill, utility statement or a certificate from a supplier of utilities confirming the arrangement to pay for the services on pre-payment terms (includes land line telephone/land line cable company bills, but excludes all mobile telephone bills).

To confirm your address

Current UK or EEA Photo Card driving licence (full or provisional) no older than 10 years from the date of issue. Current UK (old paper style) full driving licence (old style provisional is not acceptable).

Recent systems-generated or signed documentation from a regulated financial services sector firm indicating that the account / investment / insurance relationship exists and which contains your address. Current local authority tax bill.

Current local council rent card or tenancy agreement.

Recent utility bill, utility statement or certificate from a supplier of utilities confirming the arrangement to pay for the services on pre-payment terms (includes land line telephone/land line cable company bills, but excludes all mobile telephone bills).

Current benefits book or original notification letter confirming your right to benefits or state pension.

Current known housing association tenancy agreement or rent card.

Current TV Licence or renewal letter.

Current Vehicle Licence reminder.

What we buy

Here at The Gold Exchange we accept all types of gold as it all has value, whether it is unwanted, broken jewellery, dental gold or old gold coins. Please see ‘what we buy’ for a complete list of the types of gold item we buy.

How can I work out the value of my gold?

Simple, just weigh your gold item in grams and check the ‘hallmark’ for the carat value, then put the data in our gold calculator which uses the most up to date gold prices to value your item. If you cannot see the hallmark or do not have accurate weighing equipment don’t worry, we will carefully weigh and determine the gold value for your gold when we receive it.

I have more than one carat type

No problem, we will separate out the different carats and give you a valuation for each.

My gold isn’t hallmarked

We will buy all gold, hallmarked or not, and perform a simple yet highly accurate test to determine the precise gold content and therefore carat value of your item to give you the best price possible.

I don’t know how much my gold weighs

If you do not have accurate weighing equipment don’t worry, when we receive your gold we will carefully weigh it to the nearest 0.1 gram to ensure you get the best price possible.

How do I get my scrap gold to you?

All gold must be packaged safely and securely in a jiffy bag with extra padding if necessary and sent by the Royal Mail’s signed for Special Delivery service which guarantees next day delivery. Please note, we cannot be held accountable for any gold items lost in the postal system.

How do I know you have received my gold?

Once we have received and valued your gold we will email you with confirmation and a valuation.

How do I get paid?

Once your gold has been valued and you accept the offer, payment can be made in three ways. We can either make a priority payment where the money will be in your account that same day by 3.30pm for a fee of £25.00 or a BACS payment where the money will be in your account in 4 working days. Alternativley a cheque can be issued, but it must be in the same name and adress of the ID provided.

How long does it take to get paid?

Payment will be sent within 24 hours of your acceptance of our valuation.

What are your business hours?

The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 09:30am to 05:30pm. Office hours are Monday to Friday from 09.30am to 05.00pm.

What about gemstones in my jewellery?

We do not buy gemstones.

Do you buy silver as well as gold?

Yes, please contact us with the details if you have silver you wish to sell.

What if I change my mind once I have sent you my gold?

Once we have received, weighed and valued your gold we will make an offer by way of email. You can then choose to either accept the offer or reject it in which case we will send back your gold.

The gold market always fluctuates, what happens if the value for my gold changes once I have sent it?

We guarantee the initial valuation obtained by the gold site for two days; thereafter it is subject to our final confirmation upon receipt of the gold.
